Poem of the week

Red States

george bush sends missiles abroad, leaves innocent faces bathed in red
american cluster bombs bulldoze new landscapes, homelands paved red

in iraq a mother counts, one by one, the minutes till her daughter’s return from school
she hopes no bombs rained rapid today, leaving her baby girl draped in red

politicians promote police presence, claim they’ll clean up these filthy streets
officers spray bullets at black backs, dump them in coffins while cop’s still get paid in red

in richmond my mother awaits my return home to her four walls of protection
she prays I haven’t been shot, not another cold corpse on the street painted red

to escape this violence I shut my eyes to the world, retreat to the peace of an empty page
dream of no bombs no bullets dissecting loved ones, no more memories stained in red
